How to Prevent Back Pain

The advances in modern technology have made our lives more convenient and efficient. You can use mobile devices and other gadgets to complete your work, order your food, do your shopping, and get your entertainment. However, too much reliance on the digital world is not without its drawbacks – our bodies were not created to be still for too long. As a result, back pain is a very common complaint in America today. Here are few tips on how to prevent back pain:

Relieve pressure: We spend about 1/3rd of our lives sleeping. Lying on your back can increase pressure on your spine. Put a pillow under your knees to elevate your legs. This reduces pressure on your back and can prevent back pain.

Reduce strain: Wearing high-heel shoes puts a lot of strain on your back. Shoes with less than 1-inch heel are best for reducing or preventing back pain. Carrying objects improperly is another way to strain your back. When carrying luggage, try to distribute the weight on both sides of the body and use a bag with wheels for heavy loads. Simple stretches will also help reduce strain and keep your back limber.

Protect your spine: Improper posture can damage the intricate architecture of your spine. Avoid slouching over your desk at work and use ergonomic furniture that supports your back. While walking, make a conscious effort to avoid hunching. Your spine is well protected from injury when you sit tall, stand tall, and walk tall.

Stay active: Today doctors do not recommend spending too much time in bed even if you have a back injury as it may slow down your recovery. If you work at a desk job, getting up every hour for a 5 to 10-minute walk can do wonders for lower back pain.
Strengthen your core: Your abdominal muscles, external obliques, and back muscles surround and support your spine. Strengthening these muscles not only improves your appearance, but significantly relieves back pain. Along with exercise, increasing your intake of calcium and vitamin D will help keep your bones strong and slow down loss of bone mineral density. It is a good idea to check with your doctor before starting any new exercise routine or taking supplements.
