The Spine Center @ NewportCare is a leader in non-operative treatment of the spine. One of the newest non-operative treatments for the spine are PRP and Stem cells therapy.

New advancements in spine injections with platelet rich plasma (PRP) and/or Stem Cells have shows excellent results in treating spine conditions. Surgery may not be the best treatment for every patient. As such, we utilize this new technology to provide non-operative options to address spine conditions.

PRP and Stem cell treatments are designed to improve outcomes, reduce pain, and provide an alternative to surgery.

All the treatments we provide are research based. In conjunction with the available research, we have developed unique techniques and treatments to obtain positive results from PRP and Stem Cells.

Whether PRP or Stem Cells or Both is right for you is best discussed during your consultation.

How Does PRP Therapy Work?

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) has emerged as an alternative to other injectable treatments and surgical options. PRP is comprised of a potent cellular milieu containing platelet concentrations, as well as an undifferentiated mixture of anti-inflammatory, pro-inflammatory, anabolic and catabolic mediators. This mixture will stimulate a supra-physiologic response and elicit the body’s natural healing potential. These mixtures have the ability to address chronic injuries.

Simply stated, PRP therapy works by isolating and concentrating the platelets and specific blood products within your own blood and selectively injecting them into injured areas, triggering your body’s natural healing process and thereby reducing inflammation and pain, with restoration of function.

We know that joints, tendons, muscles, nerves and spine require a unique PRP formation to obtain great results. These formulations are incorporated in our treatments.

Conditions We Treat With PRP Therapy

PRP therapy has been applied to an array of musculoskeletal injuries, and has exhibited positive results in most. We’ve successively used this new and innovative approach to treat a wide range of conditions and areas of pain, including:

  • Spine arthritis
  • Muscle tendinitis of the spine and other parts of the body
  • Disc herniation and the resulting pain
  • Acute ligament and muscle injuries in athletes
  • Muscle tears or pains originating from muscles
  • General neck and back pain
  • Sciatica and herniated discs
  • In addition, PRP therapy is commonly used as a complement to orthopedic surgery, as a potential method for enhancing the healing process. Some patients receive PRP injections after surgery while undergoing rehabilitation or while in the operating room to try and accelerate recovery and regulate inflammation naturally.

What To Expect During Your PRP Therapy Appointments?

You can expect your PRP therapy visits to be a very comfortable and easy experience. Our team of surgeons are among the most experienced in world, having performed thousands of injections for nearly 20 years.

To begin, we will draw your blood and processing will begin. This process of PRP preparation isolates the platelets and concentrates specific blood products. We will then injection the specific region(s). The region(s) are determined by your surgeon after they have reviewed your history, your physical examination, all diagnostics tests and your desired goals.

Under image guidance, of an ultrasound image and/or fluoroscopic image, our surgeon will then inject the PRP directly into your specific injured areas. Imaging is utilized to correctly place the PRP solution is the appropriate location(s).

After your injections, there is often a very brief recovery period. For the first two days, it’s normal to experience some swelling and discomfort at the injection site, which should resolve on its own. In the meantime, we will provide you with instructions on safe ways to manage the discomfort.

Generally depending on the body region and extent of your injury, you may begin to feel the results of your PRP therapy within two to eight weeks. Ordinarily, the symptom relief and healing process continues to improve for up to six months after your final treatment.
